They Are not Alone! Domestic Violence against women in PNG- you can do something about it!

Story

Hi there,

Some of you would be aware that I am given, at times, to somewhat ardeous bike rides that some have even suggested, should not be undertaken by someone my age!  This is happening again on October 22, where I will be riding in the Bowral Classic.  This ride is 165kms with 2,000 metres of climbing- basically all hills.

While doing this will no doubt cause some temporary pain, it is nothing compared to the suffering of most women in PNG.  At least two thirds of women experience family violence and in some parts of country, 90% of women are victims of domestic violence. It is hard to believe that this is happening in a country so close to our shores!!

You can provide a place of refuge for women escaping violence. You can help them recover from the emotional and physical trauma of abuse, help them to know their worth and live full and meaningful lives free of fear. Women like Angela, whose husband beat her with a plank of wood in front of their children, breaking her nose and her arm, leaving her unconscious.

Women like Angela need a refuge, a facility where they can access counselling support and safe, temporary housing. A place where they can access life skills and small business training to help them rebuild their lives. Through the Church Partnership Project (CPP), ADRA has already trained community members and pastors to deliver counselling support to victims and will continue with this important work.

Your donation will fund:

  • Building renovations (to convert a run-down church wing into a counselling room, kitchen and bedroom)
  • Furniture and soft furnishings (eg beds, tables, curtains, kitchen utensils, crockery, etc)
  • Care packages for women (eg personal hygiene items and linen)
  • Small business start-up resources (eg sewing machines)

With your help, this centre can be a model for other churches in Papua New Guinea to follow, multiplying your impact and helping women right across the nation.

Let’s show them they are not alone. Whatever you can donate, will go a long way towards providing refuge for PNG women.

I really appreciate your help;

Paul Bogacs
